WHEN the First Edition of 20,000 Words appeared in 1934, it was necessary to explain at some length the value of a "dictionary without definitions." Now it may suffice to remind the reader that in most cases we go to the dictionary for spelling or word division rather than for a definition. The omission of most definitions in this volume makes it possible to print the word list in large type, even in so small a book. Much space has also been saved by the omission of unnecessary words of two classes : thousands of short, easily spelled words like cat and dog and also thousands of very unusual words that are included in the ordinary dictionary for the sake of lexicographical completeness. Because of the very careful selection of the vocabulary, the present list of a little more than 20,000 words represents the useful part of an ordinary dictionary vocabulary of several times that number.
