Advocates for and against the teaching of formal English grammar in schools stand opposed almost equal in numbers. The weaponry of the arguments on both sides is probably equal in theory and sophistica¬ tion and the open-endedness of the debate is unlikely to be resolved by any commission of inquiry or, indeed, any diktat from an enterprising Secretary of State for Education. However, the antiformalists have for some decades had the edge and a feeling is growing that there is a balance here to be restored. Teachers of foreign languages in particular, observing the neglect of Latin and the virtual desertion of Greek, despair of the grammatical illiteracy of pupils beginning the study of a European language, where grammatical rules tend to demand a stricter response than in English. One senses a hardening of attitudes, leading to more grammatical awareness, away from the leniency of self-expression that has aimed to liberate pupils from bogeymen grammatists.
