There may be a smidgeon of truth in the proposition that those who read books on usage don’t need them, and those who need them don’t heed them. But in the rich broth that is the English language there is always something new and worthy of attention bubbling to the surface. Rules that once seemed inviolable may be challenged and found wanting. A preposition is placed at the end of a sentence and at elevision series set in Outer Space dares to boldly split an infinitive, yet the world keeps turning. New words arrive to keep pace with changes in everyday life. The ubiquitous computer spawns download, app, iPad and other newcomers by the dozen. Old words find their meanings extended - a clinch, as well as being a romantic embrace, becomes a birdwatcher’s triumph when it means ‘the sighting of a rarity’. Other words pass out of fashion. It may be a loss to the language, but who nowadays, outside Scotland, where traditions die hard, uses anent to do the job of about, regarding or concerning?
