Plain English Campaign has had many victories in its battle against gobbledygook and jargon. We have always stressed the importance of writing documents such as agreements and social security forms in plain English, so that everyone can understand them easily (and not just the lawyers or civil servants who write them!). It isn't only the language of government forms and legal documents which people find difficult. Books and manuals which are supposed to instruct often simply confuse. We all know, for example, how difficult it can be to programme a video recorder or change the oil filter on a car just by following the instructions in the manual. It is even more frustrating when you find that the task itself is very simple once the operation is explained clearly.
