A wise king, it is said, will teach his soldiers to read, his generals to write. The implications of this statement are obvious. The more skills an in¬ dividual has as a communicator, the more that individual is given increasing responsibilities. Our objectives in writing this text are not different from those of writ¬ ers of traditional freshman English textbooks. We believe that knowledge which cannot be communicated is not completely useful, that the ability to communicate is an important ingredient for professional sources, and that many of the problems of the world would be solved if people could communi¬ cate with each other. We also believe that the basic requirements for effec¬ tive communication are the same whether one is talking/writing about Shake¬ speare, electronics, or baseball. The need is still for direct and functional speaking and writing. Verbosity must give way to precision.
