At first glance these notes might appear to be just another traditional grammar text. If that were so, the notes would not have been worth writing. The important difference between this set of notes and traditional English grammars is the code. English teachers must spend a great many hours writing the same (inadequate) comments on students’ essays. Certainly I have found myself doing this and have wondered whether students have really benefitted from the terse comments I have written. It occurred to me that it would be more helpful to students if I were to write out a set of detailed explanations together with appropriate exercises to drill students in each skill, and having done this properly once, to then refer students to these explanations and exercises through a simple code.
