The Canadian version of English Simplified retains the spirit of earlier editions but puts many of the illustrative examples and exercises into a Canadian context. This is done not from narrow nationalism but for effective instruction. Congress, therefore, gives way to Parliament, the Stars and Stripes to the Maple Leaf, and Kalamazoo to Kenora. Of course, we are North Americans, and nothing is served by expunging references to the United States (or, indeed, other countries) where an example is clearly well known (like JFK, Carnegie Hall, the Louvre). Where there are clear Canadian preferences in spelling, I have used them but have otherwise followed the prevailing North American use.
