Essay Essentials is designed for Canadian college students taking introductory courses in essay writing. Its numerous exercises are designed to teach and reinforce writing skills, and its examples and practical assignments emphasize the development of the techniques that lead to the effective communication of ideas. The teaching of essay writing skills has evolved over the past few years into two distinct approaches: “bottom-up” and “top-down.” Essay Essentials will be a useful text for either approach. We have provided instruction and reinforcing exercises applicable to the freewriting and brainstorming used in the bottom-up approach as well as to the more traditional heuristic method of the top-down approach, familiar to users of The Bare Essentials. We have found that different approaches (or even a combination of approaches) to generating ideas suit different students. Whatever approach is chosen, the goals are the same: well-organized thoughts, fully developed presentation of a subject, and clear and correct expression in essay form. Our aim in Essay Essentials is to assist students to achieve those goals through whichever process the instructor determines is most effective.
