During my 13 years as an instructor of developmental English at City Colleges in Chicago, I found that many ofmy students had trouble recognizing and correcting sentence-level errors in their own writing. I concluded that most developmental-writing students were able to improve their writing significantly if they (1) understood basic sentence structure and then (2) frequently practiced applying this understanding to their own work. A number of basic writing texts emphasize either sentence structure or practice activities; Foundation combines both strategies in a single text. Foundation begins by introducing students to core sentence elements and moves on to teach relationships between and among elements; it then shows students how to make correct judgments about sentence structure and word usage in the context of those elements. To apply and test dieir knowledge of sentence structure, students are taught a sentence marking system in easy- to-understand steps.
