It is unfortunately true that numerous college students cannot correct fundamental sentence errors in their own writing. Many of these students are among the most serious and dedicated; yet courses intended to help them are generally not as successful as either the students themselves or their instructors would wish. Foundation was designed to solve this problem by bringing together the two most common teaching methods in a single text. Having taught for many years in the City Colleges of Chicago, I found that developmental writing students need a firm understanding of both basic sentence structure and word usage as well as plenty of practice in applying this knowledge systematically to their own work. Most texts in this field seem to emphasize one method at the expense of the other. As a result, only a very small number of students are adequately served. With Foundation, any developmental student can learn to correct his or her sentence errors consistently and confidently.
