Good reading is far more than recognizing words in print, far more than merely recalling main ideas and related details. Good reading calls for active participation of the reader in reacting to the ideas set forth by the writer and in extending beyond the page to establish relationships with previous knowledge and experience. Certainly being a good reader is basic to becoming well educated. Free to Read is a text in developmental reading for youth and adults who are concerned about improving their basic reading skills. High school and community college students who are looking forward to vocations or to academic careers will find ihat the carefully planned sequence of lessons will provide them with a means of testing their reading proficiency and developing skills that can be transferred to all types of reading. The topics are timely and interesting to youth and young adults alike: people, values, jobs, personal decisions, controversial issues, and man’s dreams and achievements.
