The role of Greek in the development of Western European civilization barely needs an introduction. Some of the most influential texts in Western European history have been written in Greek: the works of Homer, the first ever history by Herodotus, the philosophical works of Plato and Aristotle, the historical accounts of Xenophon, Plutarch and Thucidides, the plays ofSofocles, Euripides and Aristofanes, the New Testament. Greek has been spoken since about the 18th century BC, maybe even earlier. The first, rather fragmented, records of the greek language come from clay tablets dating from the I4th to 12th century BC written in linear B, a syllabic alphabet (each symbol representing a syllable, not a sound). Between the 10th and 8th century BC the Greeks adopted the Phoenician alphabet, and by the 5th century BC this alphabet had developed into the 24-letter alphabet that Greeks use today.
