    The kanji are the written language of china and japan also adopted more than a thousand years ago by korea and vietnam. Kanji are necessary to understand chinese and japanese thinking and culture. In many ways, the japanese and chinese people think in written kanji as well as by sounds and concepts, thus the orient has a wealth of symbols and symbolism particularly its own that the alphabet-using countries lack. Of course the alphabet is easier for reading and for writing, but literacy in kanji has a far higher standard. The ability to visualize thousands of kanji is to have a reservoir of mentally pictured symbols for objects, for actions, for ideas, and for combinations. An oriental student of chemistry simply adds the formulas for organic compounds to a multitude of learned kanji compounps.
