The first edition of Merriam-Webster’s Guide to Business Correspondence represented a unique attempt to provide thorough instruction in virtually every aspect of business letters. Unlike many books from other publishers, it was not primarily a text on “‘business writing,’ devoted to lessons in persuasive expression and before-and-after examples of business prose. Nor was it a comprehensive collection of sample letters, another standard genre. Rather, while devoting some space to achieving clarity, force, and a desired tone in correspondence prose, and while providing over 40 sample letters, it largely concerned itself with such essential topics as the elements of letter formats, English style and grammar, forms of address, business clichés, government correspondence, and office mail.
