This is a book about writing for people not trained as writers, but who find themselves having to write as a part of their professional lives. The book was developed many years ago, before we became professors, when we worked together in the aerospace industry during the hectic race to put a man on the moon. We were astonished to see how many of our professional colleagues, all experts in their fields, dreaded the act of writing even a simple memorandum. They simply misunderstood what was expected of them. No one expected them to write as brilliantly as Ernest Hemingway or as easily as their favorite sports writer. Yet no one told them otherwise, and so, in their ignorance, they labored mightily to bring forth a mountain of bad writing. Moved by the recollection of those bad times, we have tried to bring about a new awareness of just what is ex¬ pected from nonprofessional writers engaged in practical writing.
