Priorities is a handbook containing information about writing proper sentences, paragraphs, essays, and research papers. It differs from other handbooks in two significant ways. First, grammar in most handbooks is arranged in categories that methodically exhaust each subject on the assumption that students will turn to the correct section when they need help. Such an arrangement is confusing to those who need a great deal of help, who may not know under which heading to find help, or who are accustomed to reading books from cover to cover. Such students may open a handbook at the beginning and get bogged down in the distinctions between adjectives and adverbs or between the active and passive voices before they are even sure of how to find verbs in their sentences. For this reason, Priorities begins with the major business of structuring written work and then, in the grammar section, presents the essential information first and the supplementary information next.
