All English words are not of equal importance, research shows that students should be taught words they will encounter often in print. The National Reading Panel (NRP, 2000) reports that the more thoroughly students learn high-frequency vocabulary, the better able they will be at comprehending text that contains these or similar words. This book provides tools needed to teach high-frequency words-the important words that are necessary for literacy success. It includes vocabulary words selected from many of the most widely referenced English word lists, including the Harris-Jacobson, Fracis Kucera, Dolch, Hirsch Core Vocabulary, McRel Basic Words, and Fry Basic Words of the English Language. In addition, it includes the most widely used terms on norm-referenced standardized reading and content area-achievement tests as well as state-based competency accountability measures.
