When learning a new language it is important to understand the link between the written and spoken form of the language. It is also important to realise that there is more than one way to learn a new skill such as learning a language. For this reason, this book uses a ‘multi-sensory’ approach to learning English spelling and pronunciation patterns. A ‘multi-sensory’ approach means using more than one method to learn and remember something. For example, the approach used in this book encourages use of all the following skills and senses: • visual - seeing the patterns and relationship between English spelling and pronunciation, • auditory - hearing words with the same sounds by reading aloud words in rhyming sentences, • physical - writing the words for consolidation of the patterns by using varied writing activities, • logical - understanding the patterns of English spelling, such as which letter combinations are possible in English and which never occur in English.
