This second edition of Starting Points has undergone several major revisions, chief among them being the organization of the text. Out of a belief that students can profit from understanding that writing is a detailed and arduous process, I have reorganized Starting Points to emphasize the subordinate role grammar plays to writing. In this edition, students explore the writing process in the very first chapter, without worrying about grammar and sentence structure; thus they see that it is their ideas, and how effectively they can express them, that are of primary importance. The grammar and sentence structure elements come into play, then, as tools that enable writers to express themselves more clearly and powerfully. The first chapter leads students through the steps of one process they may use in writing, while emphasizing that the process any writer uses must be tailored to that person’s particular needs. The chapter ends with a reminder that the process does not end with the flow of ideas onto paper; rather, that is a beginning, while a finished product is a blend of content and correctness of expression.
