If you follow the instructions given on page x, they should lead you quickly to the spelling of any English word you are likely to need for everyday purposes. Looking up words in a dictionary, unless you already know how to spell them, can waste much time. If, for instance, you cannot spell the four words that sound like 'newclear', 'newmatic', 'newrotic', 'newsance', you should be able to track them down more speedily here than in a dictionary. Most pocket- dictionaries, moreover, are unable to find room for the many and various endings of a particular word - a favourite haunt of spell¬ ing mistakes - so a list of common word-endings has been added to the end of this book, together with some general guide¬ lines which follow the Introduction.
