This dictionary is not just an English dictionary with the definitions missing; the words in it have been chosen especially because they may not be easy to spell. For this reason some common words will not be found in it. However, to have included all the words in the language which are difficult to spell would have made the dictionary too long, so we decided to limit ourselves to words likely to be used by the general reader or writer. This meant that only the commonest legal, medical and musical terms could be included. Very few proper names are given, and foreign words are included only if they have passed into common use. Thus ‘chauffeur’ and ‘debut’ are included, but not ‘habitué’ or ‘parvenu’. A few common slang words have also been given.
