In this new edition of the Oxford Children’s Dictionary we present an entirely new text which has drawn on the experience gained in writing new editions of the School Dictionary and the Primary School Dictionary, and on the contacts with primary schools and their teachers that formed a part of these projects. The aim has been to explain in a clear and straightforward style the meanings and use of the English words that children aged 8 and upwards are likely to come across and want to use. When a word falls outside the normal range but needs to be included, it is marked as ‘(not an everyday word)’ when it is more formal or technical than normal, and ‘(informal)’ when it is more colloquial than normal.
