The Word Book II presents basic information about the most commonly used words in the English language: how to spell a word, how to divide a word into syllables, and which syllables are stressed when a word is pronounced. The list of more than 40,000 words contained in this new edition is drawn from The American Heritage Dictionary: Second College Edition. Word selection is based on the latest computer frequency studies developed by Houghton Mifflin Company, a leader in dictionary publishing and a pioneer in the creation of computer software for spelling verification and correction. Obsolete, rare, and archaic forms have not been included in The Word Book II. Many colloquial words and technical and scientific terms, particularly those in common use, have been entered. Proper names and nouns have been omitted unless they appear as part of another, frequently used compound.
