The Thorndike-Barnhart Intermediate Dictionary is a revision of the Thorndike-Barnhart Junior Dictionary, first published in 1935 as the Thorndike-Century Junior Dictionary. This revision is in an entirely new format from the Junior, in line with the design of modern textbooks. The greatly expanded content includes hundreds of entries reflecting the increased technical and scientific vocabulary of our time. Dr. Edward L. Thorndike’s fundamental principle of explaining the meaning of words in terms that pupils can understand has been faith¬ fully adhered to in this book. A trained editorial staff has screened citation files for new entries and meanings and has carefully examined the definitions and sentences to make sure that the dictionary gives explanations of hard words in terms that pupils understand. Many additional illustrative sentences have been added to clarify the definitions. These sentences have been written to reflect the pluralism of our society, and at the same time to avoid unfortunate stereotypes that abound in many textbooks and reference works.
