Homework can be a valuable link between what you do in the classroom and the parents you serve, but many parents say they struggle to make the most of homework time. According to a 2014 survey conducted by the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL), 60% of parents struggle to help with their children’s homework assignments (NCFL, 2014). The biggest challenges to helping their children with homework was a lack of understanding about the subject and time. Your efforts in planning and assigning homework can make a significant impact in empowering parents to be teaching partners. The simple process used in this series of week-by-week assignments establishes an effective routine that can enrich a family’s experience with reading. Just imagine the cumulative effect of a child having this type of support from grades 1–6; the weekly minutes add up to hours of added involvement and growth in reading skills. And it can all happen in two chairs at the kitchen table or on the living room couch. As an educator, you have the unique opportunity to invite both students and parents to learn and grow.
