It is a hard word—grammar—close to cram and grimace; mar is in there, and ram. In my experience, most students do not sit up joyously if you announce: “well, we've cleared the decks, so now we can learn some—grammar!” But for those of us who love words and the way words fit together, grammar is a joy and a wonder, and I believe we can pass on our love of language. Over the years, I have discovered that students must acquire an understanding of grammar before they can improve their writing. But how do you teach form to reluctant students when there is so much content to cover in any course? Professors barely have time to teach the essay format and edit submitted essays—and do students even read those comments? Some professors give a percentage of the essay grade to a revised draft, so students will read and apply instructor feedback. But is this enough? What do we do with students who have little grammar finesse?
